Bats on Postage Stamps

A couple of years back, I wrote an article for Suffering is Hip called BATS: A Personal Essay on the Order Chiroptera with Parenthetical Tangents.

If you've seen that article already, you might remember that part of the article includes a few bits of trivia about bats, including a mention that the US Postal Office had never issued a postage stamp featuring bats (although they regularly put all sorts of other species on stamps). This piece of trivia I'd originally found in a detailed article about bats on postage stamps in the Spring 1999 issue of Bats, Bat Conservation International's member publication.

Well, recently I found out that the US Postal Office has now issued a commemorative edition picturing American Bats on stamps. The edition, released just this September, has four different stamp designs with four different species of bats featured.

Sooooo, if the idea of being able to have bats on your postage stamps gives you a special little tingle, well, see the US Post Office's website for details.

I usually pay little attention to what's on my postage stamps as I'm usually just lucky to scrounge up a stamp in my mess when I need one that actually happens to have the correct postage according to current rates. So, I don't much tend to care what's pictured on it as long as it's still usable without having to also try to scrounge up any 1-cent and 2-cent stamps that I might or might not still have as well.

But I even broke down and bought some of these bat stamps. Just had to.

Here's your e-kleenex. Should I be apolgetic or pleased the news about bat stamps affected you so keenly?? Actually, the real question is -- did it make you run right out and get some stamps for yourself? Hehe.

Like the new blog set-up with the convenient attached comment field thingie? You don't have to go to my guestbook anymore to make cryptic comments. Is that a good or bad thing?

As to what elves learn in school -- how would I know? I didn't go to elf school. The tuition was too high.

Mbat, you're right up there with Brandy - and you know what the sailor said about her.

I'm waving my hands around, which albeit admittedly makes it difficult to type, in a Mz. 'merica gesture of weepiness and gushing to discover that I was your first blog child on this new system.

Thanksgiving was good. Considering the number of people occupying the house and taking into account Henry VIII imitations that must occur, Three Mile Island was called for an extree special Tom. Good thing they are on autodial here. Some veeblefester is explaining the nonfunctionality of three thumb possession. I disagree. It's needed in cases like right now. Three thumbs up MBat on the new blog and blog notes.

Stamps were ordered. In large quantity. They arrive in time, they replace these snowmen stamps that scream, "Warmest Wishes for the Holidays" at me. Your message was effective. Your blog was ripped and stripped over to another place that is frequented by the great and powerful C. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. (insert pyrotechnics now) A place where nature conservancy is of importance. Or we all view it as such.

Sum total, is it a good thing - on both accounts - remains to be seen, justified or vindicated, si?

I thought a blog child meant a blog inspired and started after the writer was inspired by reading someone else's blog, or something like that. Did you mean you ran right out, bought a plethora of bat stamps, AND started your own blog all after reading that one little post about stamps?? (If you did, best cough up the url -- let's read you for a while!)

I'm kinda presuming you didn't mean that but meant you got to be the first person to post a comment in the comment thing anywhere here on the new spiffy Movavable Type blog (which is what provides all the nifty extras -- like the comment field and categories and I think there was a kitchen sink option somewhere in the code .... )

And, yup, you were the first person to post a comment on the renamed/moved/redone blog here! I think you were the first person to post a comment when I redid the guestbook eons ago on the main site, too. Hmm.

I only moved the blog here and redid the design/name a few weeks back, and I only started changing all my internal links to it a couple weeks ago. So, it's kinda sitting around quietly at the moment. I'm not sure I really want it to get too noisy. You know how slow I get about updating stuff sometimes ..... hehe.

Anyway, happy to hear you've acquired a batch of bat stamps and passed on the word of their existence. I've been putting bat stamps on the letters I send to my friend in jail (he's mentioned briefly in an earlier post). (Uses for bat stamps #15.) He was pretty entertained -- as much as it is possible to be entertained in such a situation, considering.

Yes, I agree, about George being missed. If he ever traipses into the blog commentary here, maybe I'll have to make him his own category .....
