Male vs. Female Writing

Interesting little program called The Gender Genie that tests a piece of writing to calculate if it was written by a male or a female (according to criteria worked up from researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and Bar-Ilan University in Israel). (link via Instapundit)

Just out of curiosity, I entered my own writing in it -- a sample of my fiction, my non-fiction, and a blog entry. All three samples were "diagnosed" as having been written by a male. (By the way, for those who don't happen to know, I'm female.)

Amused me.

I went to put in my latest blog entry, The Day That Never Ends (which is a silly poem) and it said I was male. When I selected fiction and non-fiction, however, it said I was female.

I guess this means I write in my blog like a man but my fiction and non-fiction voice is female?!

According to the articles the Gender Genie pages refer to, the people doing the research are basing their criteria on the supposition that women tend to write more personally (using more pronouns, more about relationships and people) and men more objectively (using determiners and quantifiers, more contemplatively).

Oh, Bullpoppy, sayeth the Bat, depersonalizing herself. I am compulsively and determinedly contemplative, especially when talking about people ..... heh.

Well, I guess the operative word there is "tend." But c'mon. I'm sure if I entered one of my emails to you in there where I describe some melodrama that went on, it would have enough pronouns and relationships in it to identify me as a she. But I didn't enter a casual email in there.

Actually, the pieces I used were chunks from The Harlot's Epitaph (fiction) and my article on bats (non-fiction), and the Celery Tights blog entry.

So, a fiction piece about a dead harlot, a personal essay on chiroptera and a blog entry on my quite personal relationship with some categorically wayward panties were too male for that program, apparently ..... (oh, and when I submitted my gender in answer to their query if the Genie was correct, it called me one butch chick! My lord! Although that cracked me up. I'm soooo butch ....)

I really don't quite comprehend the criteria. If you look at the masculine/feminine word breakdown, you'll notice that the word "the" gets you male points for using it.

Um. THE?

Seems to me that that could be skewing the outcome in favor of anointing us all males.

I think your poem, according to that criteria, perhaps really ought be female. Since you are talking about yourself in relation to the person you want to strangle rather than speaking about actively strangling him. And even if you were speaking of that -- well -- how can one actively strangle someone without it being a relationship of sorts -- albeit a brief one -- namely, that of murderer and victim.

See? I can be über-contemplative without a y-chromosome, thank you very much.
