Wonder What Was In HER 12th House?

From a book review article called Studying the Seductive Women:

She [Lou Andreas-Salome] was also one of the world's great seductresses. Her list of literally hundreds of lovers and suitors included Frederick Nietzsche and the nihilist philosopher Paul Ree (she lived with both in a menage a trois), the poet Rainier Maria Rilke, even Freud. One suitor committed suicide for want of her love, and two others, including Nietzsche, attempted to end it all because their attentions were spurned.

Man, talk about hitting the motherlode in the mopey dark dude department! Impressive.

Bet she could have come up with the elusive right word for this. I'm adding her to my Dead Dinner Party guest list for sure.

One wonders whether they started out with morbid perspectives, or became slowly twisted in their wretched addiction to the peculiar arts of Lou Andreas-Salome?

Perhaps their collective intellectual impact on our society was specifically due to unspeakable deeds performed in her embrace?

Perhaps I'm merely "popping up" with my annual Holiday Season greetings...

Hmm, as I actually happened to hear a little bit more about this Lou Andreas-Salome person just in the last week, sounds like more they might have been influenced more by the lack of embrace. I would say it all sounds Freudian, but that would be redundant. Perhaps it DOES explain a few things, eh?

The tidbits of further information:

Mentioned the book (Seductress: Women Who Ravished the World and Their Lost Art of Love by Betsy Prioleau) in email to a friend who then wrote back to me with more info on Andreas-Salome:

"It's funny you should mention Lou Andreas-Salomé. I actually first became familiar with her through a book I have called The Intimate Sex Lives of Famous People. It is an awesome book, and quite well-researched for a book with such a trashy Jackie Collinsish name. In the section on philosophers, Nietszche's sex/love life is written about at some length. Here's an excerpt:
When N. was 38, he met ther great love of his life, Lou A-S. His friend and fellow philosopher Paul Rée introduced him to the 20 year old Russian girl, who in later years would become Rilke's mistress and Freud's confidante. She was rather plain but very bright and independent. She was impressed with N's elegant and gracious manners and instantly saw beyond them to a powerful genius inside. A friendship was struck amongst the three of them, and they excidedly made plans for a study group based on N.'s ideas. They called themselves "The Trinity" and decided to live together. The group was to be entirely intellectual: the baseness of passion would not enter into it. But R. and N. both fell in love with Lou. Neither one admitted it, and they began to live together in assorted, changing combinations which added to their problems. Neither R. nor N. ever made love with Lou; in fact she probably remained a virgin until several years after her marriage to a theologian."

Then, was talking about something with a friend at a party a couple of days ago and Freud got brought up in passing. So, I mentioned the Nietzsche/Freud/Rilke connection from this book and this friend said he'd heard of Andreas-Salome before and happened to have a photocopy of this great picture of Andreas-Salome whipping Nietzsche.

Oh, yes, don't ya think flogging's great way to show off the purity of a friendship without the baseness of passion? It's soooooooo intellectual. Silly gits.

(Somehow I just had Minimal Man's version of that Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood song run through my head: "You are my friend. You're special to me.")

Think I'm gonna have to read this book ....
